There are a number of very cool things in store for the participants.

What delighted me more than anything is the incredible energy of CREATION! A team from San Diego was brought in to produce the show. SCRAPPY and wildly creative is how I describe them. They are the ultimate in adapting for resuse! Will get the name of the team, they are GOOD!

The images of the speaker were created to host questions to the speakers. They were painted onto black paper with silver market and white paint. People will use silver markers for their questions- great idea I think!.

Stay tuned for more!

Graphic Facilitating at the Ideation Conference!

<img style="float: left; daily and in the most unique places. I will always treasure and love what happens when we leave the space open for things to emerge...and this is one of those times.

Dawn spoke passionately of a conference that was just a few weeks away, the participants, the speakers, and the vision. I was taking visual notes in all of the SXSW sessions I attended, Dawn always seemed nearby in the common sessions we attended, and I think she had glimpses of my notebook…needless to say, the wheels started turning for both of us.

First, we started talking about how cool it would be if someone was there to map the conference. Then, the more she described the intent and vision of this conference, the more curious I became, the more bought-in I was in HER success there.

Not more than one week later, Dawn contacted me with the opportunity. Now, here I am on a plane, reflecting on what happens when we stand in the wide open space of possibility!

The speakers are:

· Andy Bales – CEO of Union Rescue Mission

· Idris Al-Oboudi – Manager for City of Manhattan Beach, CA. When a group gathers specifically to talk about how they can support the poorest people on the planet, it translates into significant value---really significant value. I spent some time thinking about the simple fact that this team had gathered from all parts of the world to discuss a vast number of issues, ideas and strategies---again, all around supporting programs that help the poor. What would the cost be for this team NOT to meet face to face? It is hard to fathom. Of course, at face value, costs to gather are significant and sometimes hard to swallow---especially in tough times.

What was incredibly profound was the strength of the network that seemed to form in front of our eyes ... I could feel it and see it happening real time. In a recent HBR Survey, 95% of subscribers said they believe face-to-face meetings are a key to success in building long-term relationships. For a global team that spends much of its time regularly dealing with issues that would be categorized as crises, meeting and forming bonds on the spoken and unspoken levels result in opportunities we can't even begin to quantify. Doug Weeks of Booz Allen summed up his thoughts on going to conferences recently when he said, "I go because everybody is going to be there."

So ... we ask, can connections of gathered intelligence, forming relationships, conversation, and the building nature of collaboration happen via a flat screen and a headset?

The bottom line, which is the ROO---Return on Objective---carries WILD VALUE when meetings are well designed, the genius in the room is catalyzed, and every opportunity is made to support learning and transformation.

I saw this happen last week and the experience drives us to continue to explore ways to support meaning making for the hearts and minds that are doing good in the world ... the magic happens when people are face to face.

BAM!

Multi-Sector Collaboration - It's Time To Start The Conversation!

I've been doing some thinking around the importance of mass collaboration.

In the past we focused on developing people and teams, then the need became, how do we get people to work together across departments within an organization? Our challenge was to eliminate silos.

Now ... to meet the challenges we currently face, we have to expand our concept of collaboration to include not only those we currently work with, but how do we collaborate with people outside of our organization?

How do we bring together multiple sectors---business, non-profits, government, academia, social networks---to create new ways of innovating, building business and tackling the global challenges that face us today?

This type of cutting edge collaboration brings huge potential and raises difficult questions:

How do we bring diverse groups together for true dialogue that leads to common vision and inspired action?

How can we shift our focus from the things that separate us and instead keep our focus on the common elements of our individual visions that we can unite on?

How do we ensure that all voices are heard and outcomes supported?

In closed system groups, to ensure accountability, the vision and action plans can be tied to compensation and advancement. It was possible to put "teeth" into the decisions. We have some "push" power to enact the change we want.

In multi-sector collaborations, how do we ensure accountability and follow-through? I believe we must move from a "push" form of motivation to a powerful "PULL."

How do we work together to create a common vision and pathway forward that is SO COMPELLING that people can't help but become excited and put their energy into following through? How do we work with people in a way that they feel like they "Can't NOT" take steps to initiate change? The motivation shifts from an external push to an internal pull.

Be looking for more posts and resources on this topic as our curiosity leads us to more questions and hopefully ... creative solutions!

Like the image of Lassoing Dreams? The flight from Victoria to Vancouver is all of about 20 minutes. If you have lucked out and are sitting next to the window, the 20 minutes is an amazing journey of ocean to island. I always hope I see a whale ... I don't think the whales much like the inward passages, but I look for them all the same.

I got the aisle seat and so I defaulted to reading the airline's magazine. I ran across this article: "Social Responsibility Knows No Borders" ....

What struck me as curious: for the past nine days, I had been living within a clear set of boundaries---I was on an island. So, I continued to ponder what that meant in context of a "no boundary" thought. The author spoke of acting with responsibility to the planet and our neighbors and to consider the impact. And I get it---I have a lot to learn, but I get it.

Hang with me here ... I am still curious about the meaning of boundary ... I mean, here I was, on an island and I don't think that I had any food that was not fresh, organic and grass fed! I started to look for real estate property right away; I wanted more and I wanted this all of the time.

So ... what is it about boundaries? It was almost an expectation to ask what farm the salad came from, what was the name of the farmer who raised the cattle. Now I am back in Denver and I am craving those boundaries. I am craving the boundary that provides the opportunity get intimate with what is contained in it.

I got home and actively---well, almost obsessively---planned a trip to our local organic picking farm ... I needed to be near the people who knew that land intimately. I needed to be near the boundary that contained the berries and the hands and the land that did no harm.

What "knowing no boundaries" means to me, is that when I first love and care for the boundary that I am in, I am compelled to love and care for all that extends beyond the invisible line.

How Great It Is To Be Living In Today's World!

I woke up this morning just thinking about how great it is to be living in a time when there are so many opportunities for each of us to Do Good in this world. Strengthen relationships and support systems.

2. Build collaborations so you don't feel like you are in this alone.

3. Read, take time to develop yourself, open your mind to new ideas.

4. Explore possibilities.

5. Have some fun.

6. Feed your passions. Example: You can come home from work dog-tired and then you start doing something you love; e.g., gardening, working in the shop, playing guitar ... all of a sudden it's 2 in the morning!

7. Stay in the center of our own lives ... realize that we may not be able to control all the things that happen around us, but we CAN control how we RESPOND to the things around us. We must take responsibility for our own lives as opposed to letting our life circumstances affect all that we do.

8. Take time to BE---Human being vs. Human doing.

9. Turn OFF The TV!

10. Surround yourself with positive-thinking people. Misery loves company. Don't stay in that company too long or the only thing you will see is misery.

FREEZE

Remember when we were kids, that game we used to play where someone was IT? They would run around and try to tag you. When their hand hit the mark you had to FREEZE in place. Yes, that's right ... FREEZE TAG. The object was for the person who was IT to try and tag as many people as possible until everyone was frozen. If the person was really good, you would soon have frozen people everywhere.

HOWEVER, there was relief. If you were one of the unfrozen, you could decide to either just look out for yourself and stay out of the FREEZE zone, or you could also run around and tag the frozen people, while still avoiding the IT person. As soon as you tagged a frozen person, they would UN-FREEZE and could move around and become part of the game again.

This simple game of freeze tag got me thinking. It seems like so many people, organizations and communities are frozen in fear. The IT that freezes us can be just about anything lately ... the fluctuating economy, global warming, etc.

I'm curious about:

What is the "touch" that can unfreeze us?

How can we avoid feeling paralyzed ourselves and at the same time reach out to others to help them unfreeze?

What are some things we already know about that can help us thaw so we can move again?

The SQUINT Factor

What's "THE SQUINT FACTOR"?

We all do it. Then, you can take action.

We help folks reach this clarity and learn how to maneuver through these wildly uncertain times.

Get more info on The Squint Factor, plus FREE Podcast

The Speaker Alternative

We always say ... "The Genius Is In The Room"

Think about all the meetings you have attended where the top thought leaders in your field are assembled together in one room. "A fight is going on inside of me," he said to the boy.

"It is a terrible fight and it is between two wolves. One is evil: he is anger, envy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority and ego." He continued, "The other is good: he is joy, peace, love, hope serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion and faith. The same fight is going on inside you---and inside every person, too."

The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather, "Which wolf will win?"

The old Cherokee simply replied, "The one you feed."

Special thanks to the First People - The Legends website for gathering these wonderful stories. It is easy for us to become focused on the "Black Wolf." Yet equally in our communities and businesses there are stories of hope, generosity, passion, innovation and discovery---and this list goes on as well.

As we navigate through this pack of black wolves, it is more important then ever to remember the grandfather's advice and "Feed The White Wolves."

The Wave Report Launches Today!

We're thrilled to announce our new Ezine, The Wave Report

This first edition is chock full of great information on our latest ventures, upcoming events and free resources.

Check out information on:

The launch of our first Statewide PossibilityNOW! Prepare: Read the tide charts, check the weather, anticipate, bring everything you need.

2. The wave doesn't just come to you. You have to paddle out to the wave.

3. Practice presence and catch the "glide": a spiritual place "in the zone" where everything aligns---the wave, the surfer and the board are one.

4. Enjoy the "Green Room"---riding inside the tube.

5. When the wave seems to be crashing down around you, stay calm, focused, present and ride it out.

6. Go to where the waves are. Just because surfing is great today in Maui, doesn't mean surf's up tomorrow. Pick up your board, jump in the car and GO!

7. Sometimes a great destination may come as an unexpected surprise. Did you know that one of the best surf spots from September to May is Donegal Bay in Ireland? Only challenge is ... BURRRR, it can get a little cold!

Watch some amazing surfing action: "Struck in Tsunami"

The MODEL

Tomorrow is a big day. Wendy has some major meetings in North Carolina and we are so excited to bring this work to the world. We have formed an extraordinary team and we are co-creating all of the programs as "The FutureWave Collaboratory." The team is made up of OD consultants, visual practioners, experiential educators, social media and film teams, communication experts and storytellers.

I had the opportunity to participate on a call with Marc West. Uncertainty means stepping into the unknown in every moment of our existence. The unknown is the field of all possibilities, ever fresh, ever new, always open to the creation of new manifestations. Without uncertainty and the unknown, life is just the stale repetition of outworn memories. You become the victim of the past, and your tormentor today is yourself left over from yesterday."

I found this quote in The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success by Deepak Chopra. All of the fear that we hear on TV and in conversation requires a fork in the road. It is stunning to see a mirrored reflection of the driving principles that have informed our FutureWave effort. We feel so passionately that as a nation, we must CHANGE THE CONVERSATION. We're talking VISION ... but not vision as in the typical tactical corporate exercise that spawns just another "to do," often accompanied by a roll of the eyes. We mean the VISION that truly sets the course for creative destruction and new opportunities. We're talking NATIONAL CULTURE CHANGE. And CREATIVITY, often deemed soft and unmeasurable, and MIA from the line items in a job description. We know the GENIUS is in the room, and the exercise is unlocking the abundance that we all carry with us.

I love that McKinsey was so bold to use the words "nurture" and "innovation" in the same sentence. This tells me that the times, they are a changin'.

"Can humankind find its way to a world that is cleaner, safer, and fairer than the one we inhabit today---and can we do it with 50% more people? The answer is, possibly. It will require a complex interaction of vision, innovation, and policy all coming together at precisely the right moment. We will need leaders who have the foresight, financial wherewithal, and public standing to set the stage for global change. Just as important, we'll need grassroots activists around the world working on innovative small-scale projects and implementing visionary technologies. Perhaps the most important thing policy makers can do is allow those efforts to flourish."

Read the full McKinsey & Company article, "Nurturing Innovation"

Sometimes you just have to take action!

The Guardian.co.uk paper is my homepage screen. I feel like every time I open a magazine, watch the news, read a blog, I hear a consistent current: We must do it differently ... things are different ... same ol', same ol' doesn't work anymore. I am curious what that means to the many different people in our country.

What does it mean when President Obama tells us "the change will require effort from everyone"?

Is this particular time in history truly life changing? Will our children hear stories and lessons of what we have learned in this time?

It will have to be SIMPLE! And simple is the antithesis of where we find ourselves now.

The four pillars of the Smart Growth Manifesto by Umair Haque is the most elegant list of guiding principals I have found. By taking the time to run decisions through this filter, we'll get the story and lessons we need to tell our children. I for one will be leveraging this in every conversation I have from now on. My challenge is for you to do the same.

Outcomes, not income

Connections, not transactions

People, not product

Creativity, not productivity

Make it a great day!

Welcome to FutureWave

The start of something new!

As you read this blog, we are in the process of launching a series of projects designed to prepare leaders, organizations and communities to meet the challenges of a new world. Business strategies that worked in the past are no longer viable in our ever-changing world. As things change, we have the choice to be stuck in fear or to rise to the challenge.

It's time to think and work differently. We partner with you to lead and create innovative solutions to meet today's challenges. Clients discover that our processes unleash creative energy and joyful solutions.

FutureWave services are designed to enable companies to turn their greatest challenges into their greatest opportunities for growth and expansion. Take a look at our services:

Project Green Dreams---Empowering the Human Component of Sustainability

Many organizations work with the technical aspects of green initiatives, but miss the human component. Example: Company leaders can design a comprehensive recycling plan, but if they cannot motivate people to use it, then there is no change. Green sustainability initiatives require a change in culture, thinking and action. Successful sustainability plans arise from grassroots participation with engaged and committed stakeholders who are invested in the entire process, from generating ideas and possibilities for ways the organization can become green to designing how to make the changes.

The Project Green Dream Process is ideal for launching or expanding organizational and community Green Initiatives. FutureWave consultants take participants through a process that inspires dreams and creative solutions that translate into action with a roadmap toward success. Our initiatives are high energy, innovative, multifaceted experiences that link the common person with possibilities and actions for creating sustainable workplaces and communities. The Project Green Dream process is generally one to three days in duration and can include any number of participants.

Partner with us to envision, design, launch, measure and message your environmental sustainability initiatives!

FutureWave Summits + Full Engagement = Innovative Futures

In the past, when things were simpler, it was possible to put a few key leaders in a room to create all the solutions and action plans for an organization.

That was then---this is now.

In today's world, it is more important than ever to bring all voices together when entering into strategic planning and innovation processes. Companies can leverage the diversity of perspectives, and tap into the collective genius, to generate visions for the future that meet the needs of both today and tomorrow.

FutureWave offers a multi-day, large-scale (10-1000 participants) planning process wherein people work together to envision and design the future of their organization.

Our consultants utilize a wide range of meeting processes to custom design a multifaceted Summit Experience. We can partner with an internal team or provide a turnkey program that may include:

Appreciative Inquiry and Future Search processes

PossibilityNOW! Cafés and Open Space Technology

Virtual Technology that engages participants globally

Real-time information capture via Strategic Illustration and Corporate Storytelling

Experiential Team Building and Recreational Activities

Methods to Build Collective Leadership and Collaborative Relationships

Catch the Wave! Partner with us to lead your organization into the future.

PossibilityNOW! Cafés---Break through to what can be!

Today it is so easy to get bogged down with what we perceive as the realities of life and work. We cannot see past traditional structures, boundaries, and the way things have always been done before. It takes intention and new ways of thinking to transform uncertainty into possibility.

FutureWave offers a Café Incubator to guide individuals and groups as they focus their attention on emerging and collective intelligence. This process generates dialogue, fosters out-of-the-box thinking, and awakens possibilities. PossibilityNOW! Cafés are generally three to six hours in duration.

PossibilityNow! Cafés can be utilized to:

Facilitate dialogue around new and emerging opportunities during special events and conferences.

Gather and capture the best thinking of large groups of people for planning processes in communities and organizations.

Engage and assess collective thinking around various topics.

Break through stagnation and the fear of change to discover new directions and strategies.

Allow your curiosity to wonder in a PossibilityNOW! Café

Collaborative Leadership Series---Preparing Today to Lead Better Tomorrow

Leaders today face rapid change, complex issues, generational diversity, new technologies and crumbling structures. At this critical time in the history of the world, we must do things differently or we do not survive. Traditional leadership skills and competencies must evolve to meet these challenges.

FutureWave offers leadership retreats, classes and coaching designed to help leaders:

Come into alignment with themselves and lead from their core.

Access and use their intuitive intelligence.

Consciously tap into flow.

Build collaborative relationships and dialogue.

Formats are flexible and designed to meet the needs of the clients.
Let FutureWave prepare you today to lead better tomorrow!

Contact Us

We at FutureWave want to hear from YOU.
